JP Morgan Spent $2,000,000,000 on Data Centers in 2021
In preparation for adopting cloud, we get a glimpse at the work ahead.
I spent 12 hours on what’s essentially plumbing in our data center yesterday. I rebuilt a vSphere cluster, configured some networking, migrated some VMs, and configured user access. The same work in the public cloud might have taken me 4-hours with much of that wait time for data transfer. So, why aren’t we all in the public cloud? Is it a question of money?
Money is a consideration. My business model requires showing the journey to the public cloud and the reality of long-term living with some private data center assets. For example, JP Morgan executives gave us a little peek into the size of the overall problem.
The company spent $2B on data center-related capabilities to build and prepare apps for the public cloud. Unfortunately, this little thing called continued business operations gets in the way of us technologists simply keeping everything shiny and new.
What have been some of your hurdles for going to the public cloud?
