The rise of the Cloud Architect
From Platform groups to SRE's to now Cloud Architects. Who control influence inside an organization?
The Cloud Architect the mystic being who now controls all of the levers of selecting and adopting hybrid infrastructure technologies within an organization. Why do I say this is the case?
Well, this topic deserves an entire blog post. But for now, you have my CTO Short. I’ve noticed a transition within vendors' marketing departments targeting companies with their cloud wares. Before 2022, much of the marketing content focused on the “Platform Group.” The platform group is a loosely defined concept of a group responsible for cloud platforms. But back in 2020, I felt that the idea was waning. https://thectoadvisor.com/blog/2020/09/24/the-demise-of-the-platform-team-lets-blame-openstack/
So, if you need to sell your Kubernetes thingy to a persona within the enterprise, who is that contact? I saw a rise in content targeted to the SRE, but it wasn’t the right fit.
Now, I’m seeing content focused on the Cloud Architect. The cloud architect is a friendly persona that doesn’t sit in a single silo. Cloud architects reside in lines of business, IT, and service providers. It’s become the catchall for selling something that doesn’t fit squarely in IT. So expect a lot of Cloud Architect-focused content at VMware Explore (VMworld).
