VMware has finished shopping (itself).
The VMware Go Shop period is over and there's one less hurdle for Broadcom acquiring the vSphere company.
If you didn’t have it circled on your calendar, the Go Shop period where VMware could find and accept a better offer is over. Broadcom’s $61B offer for one of Dell Technologies’ biggest piggy banks is closer to closing. However, closer is a relative term. The EU has decided to move into a Phase 2 review of the acquisition. I believe Broadcom was hoping to have this deal done sometime this calendar year. That looks less likely.
This reprieve gives customers time to work out what they’ll do over the long term. I’ve talked to a few people, and they are all in on moving from vSphere; like FedEx is all in on moving to the cloud, the devil is in the details.

VMware vSphere is as engrained in data center operations as any technology. Moving away from the platform takes a complete top to bottom investment. Whenever a customer tells me they are moving away from VMware due to the Broadcom acquisition, I believe their intentions. However, I have less trust in the ability or stomach to execute the desire. Broadcom’s acquisition in brilliant in that way.
We’ll talk about our early reaction and what we plan to do in the CTO Advisor Hybrid Infrastructure data center.
Make sure to register for the virtual event taking place in a couple of days.
